Algerian-born North Londoner Miraa May releases her latest single, ‘Girlfriend’, an anthem of resilience and perseverance. The intimate track explores the themes of past relationships while she affirms her independence.
Moving from Algeria to the UK at just age 2, Miraa’s mother enriched their home with the sounds of Raï (Algerian pop music), which influenced a young Miraa's vocal stylings, with distinctive textured qualities unique to her artistry. Growing up in Tottenham, and the diverse multicultural city of London, Miraa May discovered her passion for music, using songwriting as an outlet and her form of expression and freedom. Miraa May found solace in her music after leaving home at 17 and navigating challenging environments and the hustle of London.
Miraa’s unique blend of London grit, soulful influences, and Algerian heritage, makes her a refreshing force within the UK music industry.
Miraa May released her debut EP, ‘The Beginning’ in 2014, which caught the attention of award-winning producer Salaam Remi. He later went on to produce her 2016 EP. ‘N15’, featuring my personal favourite ‘commit’ and the fan-favourite single ‘Benji’ which caught the attention of music fans and tastemakers and created the perfect catalyst for Miraa's career. In 2018 Miraa released her acclaimed EP, ‘Care Package’, a candid exploration of themes like consent, depression, heartbreak and freedom, which was closely followed by her 6-track EP ‘Dark’ in 2019, featuring the hit single ‘Angles’ with grime legend JME, tackling the pitfalls of social media while further expanding her genre-bending sound. Miraa’s versatility and influences span across many genres, from Afrobeat, Rap, R&B, and Soul, leading to collaborations with artists like Ghetts, Sainte, and Nines, cementing herself further as a vital voice.
2022 was a monumental year for Miraa May, reaching major career milestones after the release of her debut album ‘Tales Of a Miracle’, the album earned Miraa three MOBO nominations, including Best Album, Best Female Act, and Best R&B/Soul Act. Her unique musicality and vocals accompanied by her raw lyricism and vulnerability resonated internationally, gaining praise and being featured in notable publications including; The Guardian, The Evening Standard, Complex and Clash Magazine. Female empowerment has always been at the forefront of Miraa’s music and her debut was created entirely with a female team and featured iconic collaborations with talented including; RAYE, Mahalia, Dyo, Stefflon Don, and Jorja Smith. The album's success was quickly followed by a deluxe edition and a headline show that sold out in under an hour.
Miraa May’s musical talents span further than her solo work and have aided in working with some of your favourite artists, with co-writing credits on hits like Jorja Smith and Burna Boy’s ‘Be Honest’, Mahalia's ‘Jealous’, and Little Simz's ‘I Love You, I Hate You’ short film.
Miraa May remains introspective, and unapologetically herself, a testament to her limitless talents and the endless journey her creativity will take her. She is a unique vessel in music to express vulnerability and share stories we can all connect with. ‘Girlfriend’ is Miraa’s third single of the year, an alluring track that creates anticipation for more music from this talented artist.
Collaboratively produced by Malik N1nty Five, Benny Henny, Wesley Curtis & CTAG, and accompanied by striking visuals directed by Ray Fiasco, ‘Girlfriend’ radiates with Miraa's confidence as she reclaims her narrative, marking the beginning of a transformative chapter in her career defined by growth and liberation. After a small hiatus, Miraa returns with a renewed perspective, ready to explore fresh sounds and continue to develop and share her narrative. Miraa embraced motherhood and dedicated herself to writing for other artists, during her time away. Announcing her return to music last month with her singles ‘No Bad Energy’, and ‘Miskeena’, was a highlight to her deep connection to her North African heritage, featuring symbolic imagery and lyrics sung in her native language. Miraa’s new single sees her return to her R&B roots and we are excited to see what Miraa May explores next.
