Prior to discussing "Martinelli," who is Reggie Rankin? Can you provide a snapshot of your journey in the music industry and the key influences that have shaped your sound?

Reggie Rankin, is an emerging rapper with roots in Lagos, Nigeria. My musical journey kicked off at the age of 16 when I delved into writing and recording at a neighbour’s home studio. The diverse musical landscape of Gospel, Hip-Hop, Reggae, and the influence of artists like JCole, Drake, and Wale played a significant role in shaping my early sound.

In 2013, my official adventure into the music scene began after I moved from Nigeria to Ghana for my undergraduate studies in Mechanical Engineering. During my time there, my music gained recognition, especially within the International Student community. In 2023, I obtained my MSc in Project Management when I moved to the UK. In 2024, I dropped my new EP, "+44 RIDDIM," where MARTINELLI takes the spotlight as the lead single. It's been an incredible journey, and I'm thrilled to share my music with you!

What inspired you to create a song specifically about football players, particularly focusing on Martinelli and the Arsenal team?

I have been an Arsenal fan since 2006, it  has been a significant part of my life. Martinelli and the Arsenal team hold a special place in my heart, and I wanted to capture that connection in a song. Football has a unique way of bringing people together, and for me, it's a source of inspiration that transcends the game itself. Creating music that celebrates the players and the team is my way of expressing the joy and excitement that being a football fan brings into my life.

Can you walk us through your creative process when writing and producing "Martinelli"? How did you choose the style and theme for the song?

The journey began with the hook – I recorded it first and played it for a couple of friends, along with another song I was working on. Interestingly, they were more captivated by the hook of "Martinelli" than anything else. Their excitement and positive feedback fueled my determination to turn it into a complete track.

During our discussions, the idea emerged to incorporate lines and puns using Arsenal players, including the charismatic Martinelli. It clicked instantly, and I found the theme that would bring the song to life. The synergy between the enthusiasm of my friends and the football-inspired theme shaped the style and direction of the song

Were there any challenges or unique experiences you faced while filming the music video at the Arsenal stadium or in the changing rooms?

Filming the music video at the Arsenal stadium and in the changing rooms was an unforgettable experience, but like any creative endeavour, it came with its set of challenges. The major hurdle we faced was getting friends to show up on time as extras for the video. Coordinating schedules and ensuring everyone arrived promptly proved to be a bit tricky. Despite the logistical hurdles, the end result was truly rewarding

Football is a universal language, but music can transcend borders. How do you think "Martinelli" bridges the gap between sports enthusiasts and music lovers?

“Martinelli" harnesses this power by infusing the passion and excitement of football into the rhythm and lyrics, creating a track that resonates with both sports enthusiasts and music lovers. The song aims to evoke feelings that can be universally understood and appreciated. Whether you're a die-hard football fan or someone who simply enjoys good music, "Martinelli" invites everyone to join in the celebration of the beautiful game through the medium of music.

What message or emotions do you hope listeners and viewers take away from "Martinelli"?

Football is more than just a game; it's a source of intense emotion and excitement. Through "Martinelli," I aim to capture and convey that energy, allowing the audience to immerse themselves in the joy and enthusiasm that comes with being a fan. The music video, set in the iconic Arsenal stadium and changing rooms, adds another layer to the experience, enhancing the connection between the song and the spirit of football.

Did you have any personal connections to the players or the Arsenal team that influenced the direction of the song?

Absolutely, my personal connection to the Arsenal team, and particularly to Martinelli, played a significant role in shaping the direction of the song. Martinelli's tenacity and drive on the field resonated deeply with me. His passion for the game and relentless pursuit of success became a source of inspiration. It's a celebration of not just the players' abilities but also the qualities that make them true icons on and off the field

How important is it for artists to merge their passions, such as music and sports, to create meaningful and relatable content?

It's incredibly important for artists to merge their passions, whether it's music, sports, or any other interest, to create meaningful and relatable content. Staying true to yourself and authentically expressing the things that resonate with you is the best route to connecting with an audience.

When artists infuse their work with their genuine passions, it adds a layer of authenticity that listeners can feel. It creates a connection beyond just the music, allowing audiences to relate on a personal level
