“Champion to the world”: BBC’s love letter to Black British music and culture

It has been 2 weeks since the South London-based musical drama series ‘Champion’ was released on Netflix. Riddled with new music and performances from some of the most talented black Brits, the BBC series; originally released July 1st 2023 on BBC iPlayer, depicts the drama that can ensue when you mix family and fame. The first TV project from Candice Carty-Williams, a decorated black writer and novelist, showcases Top Boy actor Malcolm Kamulete and emerging talent Déja J. Bowens, as siblings navigating fractured relationships as they compete to dominate the music industry. South London native and musician Ray BLK also makes her acting debut and stars alongside, Rachel Adedeji, Jo Martin and Francis Lovehall.

The 8-part musical series follows siblings, Bosco Champion (Malcolm Kamulete) and Vita Champion  (Déja J. Bowen), on the verge of knife-edge sibling rivalry which sends ripples through their relationships, friendships and most importantly family. The love letter to South London rap unfolds when it becomes champion vs champion, as Bosco battles mental health and the obstacles of a comeback into the industry after prison, and Vita begins to discover that her talent could be the catalyst to her stardom.

The ‘self-titled’ Soundtrack for the series features executive producer Ray BLK, with contributions from the likes of Ghetts, Debbie., M1llionz, and Shola Ama, and a diverse production team including PRGRSHN and Ten Billion Dreams, showcasing some of Britain's Black most talented creatives. The curated soundtrack is 26 songs long and aids as a narrative driver, with performances from the stars of the series’, Déja J Bowens, Corz (Corey Weekes), Malcom Kamulete and Ray BLK herself.
