SICKA VISION INTERVIEWS JOSHUA BARAKA

Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with the rising star of Ugandan music, Joshua Baraka. At just 22 years old, Baraka has already captured the hearts of millions with his soulful R&B-infused Afropop sound. We'll be discussing his latest releases, his journey to international recognition, and his future plans.

First of all, how are you doing Joshua Baraka? Thank you for joining us for a chat!

I’m alright. Blessed to be doing this.

Your latest music video for 'Lonely' has garnered a lot of attention. We noticed parts of the video were shot outside popular shopping centre, Westfield London in White City. Could you share the inspiration behind the song, the vintage car choice and significance of being set in London?

Lonely is a song about feeling alone after love is lost. It has a 90’s RnB vibe inspired by the beat by the phenomenal P.Prime. The vintage car was a reflection of the spirit of the song which is old school. I love London and it aesthetically fit the vibe of the song.

How has being selected as a Spotify RADAR artist impacted your career and fan base?

I’ve definitely had more eyes on me. I've garnered a lot of international attention and more people are waiting on my music to drop. I’m excited to take everyone on this journey with me.

What does it mean to you to be Uganda's biggest musical export at such a young age?

It’s an amazing blessing to be in a position where I’m representing my country and shining more light on all the incredible talent we have here. Soon, more artists are going to come out of East Africa and take over the world.

How would you describe your unique blend of R&B and Afropop? What artists or genres have influenced your sound?

I’d say my music is how I feel at that time. Its my story and that of the people around me. I’m inspired by a lot of gospel, reggae, traditional african music like zouk plus lots of rnb and soul.

You've collaborated with a number of talented artists. What do you look for in a collaborator? How do you approach the creative process for a collaboration?

When collaborating I look for someone who can elevate the song and add their own unique vibe to it. Someone who will add the essence of the song because music comes first for me.

Can you tell us more about the inspiration behind your new music video for "Lonely"? What can fans expect from your upcoming single "Someday" and the "Recess" mixtape?

For the music video, I went for an old school vibe. Lots of grain and effects in order to bring out the vintage energy of the song. With the new mixtape, I’m leaning into my rnb side and reimagining it over different genres and musical ideas.

How do you connect with your fans, both in Uganda and internationally? What do you think sets your fan base apart?

I engage with a lot of my people online and also at shows. I do a lot of pop events to just hangout with my people and experience them.

What are your long-term goals for your music career? Are there any specific genres or projects you'd like to explore in the future?

I want to be the biggest artist in the world. The mixtape is dropping soon and I’m also working on my album for next year. Definitely collaborating more and touring.

How did you first get into music? What was your journey like from your early days to becoming a professional musician?

I got into music through church, then I was a keyboardist for hire playing in different bands. I started production soon after and started working on my own songs.

What inspires your songwriting? Are there any personal experiences or emotions that you often draw from?

I write from my experiences and those around me. The things I see and hear all inspire how I approach writing. I love music and I’m inspired by music itself. Other artists also inspire me to write. I’m very vulnerable in my music and if you listen to my music then you know me.

How do you balance your music career with your personal life? What do you do to relax and recharge?

Since my music is inspired by life I always make time to live. I hangout with my friends watch movies, anime and lots of other things.

What are the biggest challenges and opportunities you've faced in the music industry? What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?

The biggest challenge is staying consistent with the hard work but you just need to keep inspired. I advice all aspiring musicians to stay consistently good, grow their crafts, keep evolving and stay grounded.

It’s been a pleasure talking with you Joshua. To close, what message would you like to share with your fans as you embark on this exciting new chapter in your career?

Thank you so much for everything.I love you all. More music is dropping and I pray you keep supporting and loving me. Stay blessed.
